Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani revealed that he told current Mayor Zohran Mamdani “I pray for you” when the two briefly shook hands at Friday’s 25th-anniversary 9/11 ceremony in Manhattan.
Giuliani had previously criticized Mamdani’s decision to attend the event, but said afterward that both men avoided turning their encounter into a political confrontation.
“I think both of us knew… we could create a distraction,” Giuliani said, adding that the focus should remain on the victims of the attacks.
Mamdani has described the September 11 attacks as a “horrific act of terror” and said he attended the ceremony to honor the victims, survivors and first responders. The two men’s handshake was captured on video and quickly drew attention.
